DONE!

i finished my shawl!  finished the knitting friday night, and blocked it saturday, despite the fact that it was pouring rain.  one of the many knitting books i seem to have suddenly acquired said you could wet the material just by spraying it, so that's what i did, rather than soaking it in water - if i had done that, i could perhaps gotten some of the holes and needle-marks (whatever you call that gap between two double points) - but i was afraid if i got it totally wet, it would never dry.

of course, since it was raining out, it meant the kittens were on hand to help....

this camera seems to be a bit slow, so you sorta get an action effect on some of these...also, one day i will learn how to post clickable thumbnails.

this is the whole thing, before blocking.  it's about 52" in diameter.

the only place i have anything close to room to block it is the bed, so i stripped off the sheets, etc.  then i spread some big towels out....with some difficulty.

then angelina came to supervise:

which resulted in a bit of a spat about who, exactly, would be in charge (needless to say, i was not even in the running).
the victor gets to spoil things, isn't that how the saying goes?

now, i have to give fred credit - even though he has sat (or stood, or paced) on my lap through most of my knitting this shawl, he has never interfered with the yarn, the shawl, or the needles (other than pushing against my hand for pets when i was using them).  now that it's finished, however..well, he almost finished it completely

needless to say, i didn't let _that_  last long.  i was forced to bring out the big guns early:

fred was initially concerned, but ultimately unimpressed (naturally, the picture of him attacking the spray bottle didn't come out).
about this time the smoke alarm went off, to let me know my breakfast was done (yes, i was running back and forth between the bedroom and the kitchen trying to do both things at once) - decided to go regain my strength, and hope the rain would stop so the kittens would go out.  fortunately, the rain ended while i was eating, the kittens went out to terrorize the neighborhood, and i was able to get it all pinned out.  stretched it out to 62", and got the edges all pointy:

shut the bedroom draw, and left it for most of the day, and it all dried - so now all i need is an excuse to wear it!
i must confess, i bought a shawl pin, in anticipation -

(ok, so the point of the pin should go down - but doesn't this look more correct?)

SO - major project finished, and i only cast on two more in the process..and of course, there are the other projects that are still on the needles.  i guess the tank top can kinda go on the back burner...although it's about 3/4 done, and there is always  the chance of a santa ana that will require wearing a tank top....the september project from the knitter's almanac is something called 'nether garments' - which can be made as anything from sort of long-johns to pants.  i'm starting mine with feet, so it will be tights - if i have enough yarn.  i'm using some stuff i bought over a year ago, when i first got into knitting socks, so that lot is long gone - but if i can get to mid-thigh, i can finish in a solid color of another yarn (this is superwash sock yarn, so hopefully any similar yarn will be ok).  naturally, i can't make it simple - so i'm knitting them toe-up, both together, using a magic loop....and i decided i needed to do them in a lace rib pattern.  when i get them a bit farther, so the lace is clear, i'll put up some pictures.

..so with all that to do, i guess i'd better get back to my knitting.
