ah, to be in san diego
Oct. 22nd, 2007 10:45 amwhen the wildfires are in bloom.
i keep telling myself i really don't have anything to worry about (even though i'm in the evacuation area), because there is a whole lot of built-up area to the east of me...then i field phone calls from my neighbor worrying about the wind...and the weather person is talking about how we will have a much longer period of explosive (i.e., very strong) winds than in the 2003 fires, and i look at all the eucalyptus trees around me, and realize there are so many ways they can betray me....and i realize, i don't even know what i would take, should i have to evacuate. the kittens, of course, and i have a new bag of food for them...my medications, and i guess i should throw some undies, at least, in a bag...but what do you take, really? do i take the "important papers", or trust the fireproof box they are in? someone on the radio is talking about people with their cars full of clothes and bedding...damn, they just announced mandatory evacuations in parts of leucadia, and that's just up the road. maybe i'd better start thinking seriously about pulling things together, and wait for the reverse 911 call.
but there's really not much of anywhere to go, if it gets this far west.
