turns out, not that many, but

this is the hoosier banjo band - for some reason, they appear to be a rather grim group. this was the first group i saw, which rather had me worried. the crowd you see behind them is painted on the wall (this is the sports museum) - which gave the whole thing an even more surreal feel.

the wichita banjo band seemed to be having more fun. the ears were just for one song - the bing crosby one, with the 'or would you rather be a mule' line. (note tuba player - the hoosiers had one as well).

the wichita keyboardist, on the same number.

these are the sandplum strummers - essentially, any banjo player who comes to the festival and wants to play. the guy in the front row with the red socks looks a bit grim here, but turned out to be the cut-up of the group. (they were playing in the american legion hall.)

and yes, there are female banjo players. this one is married to the bearded guy just in front of here.
in all fairness, not everyone was quite so...venerable. this is arno hagenaars, from the netherlands - he had quite a lively style, and was the only one playing original compositions.

his keyboardist was really getting into it - practically dancing to his music

i've got a couple recordings, but i don't know quite how to post them - did a movie, also, but alas, it doesn't have sound, which makes it rather pointless.
to make up for my deficiencies as an audio recorder, here are some of my cousin's new calves, and his llama:

now i just have to figure out how to get "sweet city woman" out of my head - especially as i believe i can guarantee that it's one banjo tune that didn't get played at the festival.
...at least, i hope it didn't.
