i usually work on sundays, but i had today off, and i actually got quite a bit done.  i always feel like i don't do much of anything on the weekend - turns out, i really need the extra day.

anyway, i masked and painted the bathroom today (not actually the whole thing, just the walls that had some bad spots, and the lintels (which were peeling), one door and the furnace door (ditto) - judged it just right, i pretty much used up all the paint.  looks like i didn't miss any spots, and didn't get any paint anywhere it shouldn't be (except on me).  even the kittens seem to be paint-free (although not for want of trying on their part - fortunately, they have short attention spans).

i also baked a batch of bread - something i haven't done in ages.  it rose a lot faster than i expected it to, which turned out to be good, as i was able to shape it before i started painting - since i ended up with paint all over my hands.  the bread finished baking about the time i finished painting, which was great, because the house ended up smelling of bread, rather than paint.  it's a nice multigrain bread, and it makes quite a bit - i made 2 loaves and a dozen and a half clover-leaf rolls.  even managed to find room in the freezer for one loaf.

got that done early enough that i could spend some time on the garden - sweeping, moving stuff around, doing some deadheading and a little planting.  got the laundry done, and everything moved back into the bathroom (hadn't moved much stuff back because i was planning to paint).  did the laundry, finished a purse i was making - even finally washed a little test thing i made to see if i can felt things in my washer.  that didn't come out too well - shrunk a bit, but not really felted.  i have a front-loader, which is supposed to be gentler on things...not what you want if you want to felt things.  i guess i should try again with something in the washer to pound on it - but i don't have any old sneakers or tennis balls, can't think what else would work.  i even reorganized my underwear drawer - pulled out the stuff i never wear, so i can find the stuff i do wear.  and i did it all in my usual ADD fashion - jumping from task to task.  you know the drill - i was working on the purse, when the buzzer sounded on the washer, realized last week's laundry was still in the dryer, so started to put that away, noticed that the chair i moved away from the bathroom door so it wouldn't get paint on it was still out of place, so moved that back, started back to the dryer and noticed that i hadn't put the switchplates back on, put one up, remembered i had a second load to wash so i need to get the laundry done, started folding laundry again, remembered i wanted to deal with the underwear drawer...and on and on.  but i actually got it all done, and made a decent dinner besides.

i was a bit down when i was making the bread.  it was a recipe my mom used to make, and i was making with her mixer, and i really wished i could tell her about making it.  i don't think it was so much that it was mother's day - we never did a whole big deal for that.  it was just that it was the sort of thing we would have chatted about, in the way you do - she would have had a tip or two, or a memory of when she used to make it, and we would have compared notes on how we thought the mixer did with the dough hook.  nothing particularly deep or meaningful - but i don't know who else i could have the same conversation with.  and i just miss her.
