and it seems to be "GET ME OUT OF THIS *BLEEP*ING THING!!!*

thursday i left the cats out, even though i knew i would probably be home after dark.  i like to have them in before dark, not so much because i believe the coyotes are poised to pounce the second the sun dips below the horizon, as because the night air seems to act as an intoxicant on their fuzzy little brains, causing them to ignore my increasingly plaintive cries for them to come in.  but i figure i am going to have to deal with the fact that i will be getting home after dark once the time changes, so i gave it a trial run.

fred, in fact, sauntered up as i was getting the mail, so that was a good start - but no sign of angelina.  no little face at the door when i opened it, or thunder of little feet - but when i turned to fix the doormat, there she was, crouched quietly just by the door.  too quietly, i realize now.  but fred came in just then, and i was so relieved to have everyone in so easily, i decided such thoughtful and well-behaved kittens deserved a reward, so i went to fix them dinner, with a bit of catnip for seasoning.  when i put the bowls down, she was crouched in the dining room, and when i came back from getting fred (she doesn't let a meal get past her, fred sometimes has to be reminded that if he doesn't come & get it, she will) she was crouched down eating.  but a few minutes later, when she was finished and i stooped to give her another congratulatory pat, i noticed she was holding one forepaw up, as though she had just stopped in the act of washing it...except she kept holding it up.  so i picked her up to check her over and discovered that she had her paw through her collar, with much the same result as having her paw in a sling.  i immediately realized that the reason she had been in was probably because she couldn't get out the door in that condition, so i laughed at myself for rewarding not-quite-so-good behavior, and untangled her, figuring at least she would have learned not to do that again.

so this morning she vanished after breakfast, and remained away for over 2 hours, despite my calling her.  i finally decided that i couldn't sit around the house panicking, so got ready to do the shopping, including a trip to the bathroom (accompanied by the comics).  when i looked up, she was lying just outside the bathroom door, with the air of a cat who has been there all along, and why was i in such a state?  so i picked her up to give her a cuddle...and discovered that she had one front leg entirely through the collar, which she was now wearing as a bandolier (although a bit more snug under the armpit).  so, while it might be quite amusing to see how it looks on her as a belt, i decided to spare myself the stress of wondering whether she was performing these acrobatics inside or outside in the reach of any passing toothed creature - so she is now going au naturel.  *sigh*  well, perhaps she can wear it for company.
